Seattle, December 20, 2012—Allrecipes, the world’s #1 digital food brand with more than 1 billion annual visits, today announced the top 10 recipes of 2012 according to the searches, views, ratings, recipe box saves and social shares of 30 million home cooks. The list reveals that America has a serious sweet tooth, and craved orange-colored comfort foods over the past year. In fact, sweet potato is on the list twice and pumpkin makes into the top 10 three times!

The Top Recipes by the Numbers
The combined stats of these 10 recipes alone include more than 10 million page views from home cooks, nearly 353,000 recipe box saves, 86,000 social shares, and an average rating of 4.78 stars out of 5.

Nine of the 10 recipes are very or slightly orange, a color proven to stimulate the appetite. Perhaps the photos of these orange dishes resonate well with cooks because subconsciously they feel the most hungry when looking at orange foods?

New media and smartphones brought significant change to 2012. Allrecipes saw a 142% increase in mobile visits compared to 2011 with over 303 million visits this year from a mobile device. The company also saw nearly 5 million pins from its site, and received more than 14.7 million upstream referrals from Pinterest in 2012. Even though it didn’t make the top 10 list, the most-pinned recipe on Allrecipes is Crispy Edamame with more than 272,000 pins.

Overall traffic included more than 30 million unique visitors and 921 million visits across Allrecipes' web and mobile sites—with a #1 comScore ranking every month this year. 2012 marked the site's 15th anniversary and the celebration campaign is still happening on the #RecipeForHappiness page which hosts an ever growing collection of photos from Allrecipes’ community members around the world. Weekly Kitchen Insights – Recipes and Trends from Allrecipes.com

Cookies! The holiday cookie baking blitz is upon us, and last week Allrecipes.com's home cooks were blending butter and stirring sugar with a passion. Cookies ruled, from recipes to search terms to videos. Who can resist butter cookies with butter icing? Or snickerdoodles? Not me! Here's the past week’s recipe and search terms rundown:

The #1 new recipe last week was irresistible, capturing top numbers for page views, prints, and recipe box saves: Old Fashioned Butter Cookies with Butter Frosting It’s a recipe that definitely fits a trend reported in Allrecipes’ Holiday Measuring Cup Trend Report: 42% of online cookie bakers say that a cookie recipe must make a ‘very cool looking/pretty cookie’ in order to make it as a favorite on their Pinterest board or baking list.

  • Slow Cooker Beef Stew I also saw the largest increase in prints and Recipe Box saves week-over-week, no doubt due to being an easy supper idea and its all-star video status

Top Search Terms Last Week
When I looked at search terms driving traffic to the site, the fastest growing search term driving traffic to the site last week was snickerdoodle recipe. Other fast growing search terms driving traffic to the site included icing for sugar cookies, oreo balls, and Christmas dessert balls. The fastest growing internal search terms week-over-week included cookie, peppermint cookies, slow cooker stew, and cookie icing.

Top Performing Videos (based on week-over-week positive change)
In the video universe, cookies ruled as well. A new video starring almost everyone’s favorite flavors—chocolate and peanut butter—was the top new video based on the most video page views per day live during the week. The video makes this five-star recipe for Peanut Butter Balls III look so easy even I could do it! (I started looking at our other Christmas cookie and candy videos... yum! Lots of delicious inspiration!)

Other videos hitting the top of the charts last week included:
  •  Forever popular! The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies earned the top spot for page views, excluding all featured content. (Note: This metric excludes video detail page views generated by newsletter features, primary navigation features, and/or video homepage features.)
  • Home cooks just can’t seem to get enough of our How to Cook Salmon video! Once again, it was the week's top performer in page views referred directly from a search engine
